As autumn settles in, we turn our attention to the land — the sheds, the paddocks, the trees, the things that keep us ticking when the rain comes and the nights cool down. This local checklist is built for us — folks who know rabbit tracks better than bus timetables, and who understand that firebreaks and clean gutters matter more than city news. Tick things off, lend a hand to a neighbour, and enjoy another season of living on your own terms.
- ☐ Store away summer gear — furniture, shade cloth, pool toys, etc.
- ☐ Clean and service chainsaws, mowers, and whipper snippers.
- ☐ Check gutters and downpipes — clear out leaves and debris.
- ☐ Trim overhead branches near the house and driveways.
- ☐ Maintain or re-run firebreaks after the first rains.
- ☐ Check and run your generator — top up with fresh fuel.
- ☐ Inspect and replace wiper blades on all vehicles.
- ☐ Drain and clean evaporative aircon (down-draft) units — fit a winter cover.
- ☐ Close off internal evap vents to prevent heat loss.
- ☐ Inspect fencing and gates — repair anything loose or broken.
- ☐ Test smoke alarms and replace batteries.
- ☐ Clean chimneys and flues — especially before lighting the first fire.
- ☐ Top up firewood supply and store it in a dry, ventilated area.
- ☐ Seal drafts around windows and doors.
- ☐ Review emergency kit — torches, batteries, first aid, radio, etc.
- ☐ Check and insulate any exposed water pipes.
- ☐ Flush and inspect piping/water tanks and irrigation systems.
- ☐ Prepare garden beds — mulch, prune, and plant winter crops.
- ☐ Aerate and fertilise lawns to set them up for winter.
- ☐ Test sump pumps and check drainage around buildings.
- ☐ Check and replace any worn tires (check air in spare tires).
